Brine shrimps adrift: historical species turnover in Western Mediterranean Artemia (Anostraca)

چکیده

Abstract Brine shrimps ( Artemia ) have undergone geographic range and demographic expansions as a result of their interaction with humans since the beginning salt harvesting. This has favoured expansion some species but compromising survival others. Mediterranean native populations salina from coastal salterns lagoons are facing presence introduced invasive American monica (= A . franciscana ). However, this could not be only threat. Parthenogenetic Asian urmiana sinica widespread along other areas world. In work, use large cox1 mitogenomic datasets, phylogenetic phylogeographic inferences, time calibrated tree, we confirmed origin recent arrival current Western parthenogenetic addition, replacement Iberian by Asiatic lead us to recognize parthenogens invasive. Current development commercial importance make human-mediated introduction probable. These results demonstrate again impact that changing human interests on population or decline adapted anthropogenic habitats. makes urgent implementation conservation measures such its in fish farming production inoculation inland salterns.

Molecular phylogenetics and asexuality in the brine shrimp Artemia.

Explaining cases of long-term persistence of parthenogenesis has proven an arduous task for evolutionary biologists. Interpreting sexual-asexual interactions though has recently advanced owing to methodological design, increased taxon sampling and choice of model organisms. We inferred the phylogeny of Artemia, a halophilic branchiopod genus of sexual and parthenogenetic forms with cosmopolitan...

Toxicity Effect of Silver Nanoparticles in Brine Shrimp Artemia

The present study revealed the toxic effect of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in Artemia nauplii and evaluated the mortality rate, hatching percentage, and genotoxic effect in Artemia nauplii/cysts. The AgNPs were commercially purchased and characterized using field emission scanning electron microscope with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Nanoparticles were spherical in nature and with siz...

The Brine Shrimp Artemia: Adapted to Critical Life Conditions

The brine shrimp Artemia is a micro-crustacean, well adapted to the harsh conditions that severely hypersaline environments impose on survival and reproduction. Adaptation to these conditions has taken place at different functional levels or domains, from the individual (molecular-cellular-physiological) to the population level. Such conditions are experienced by very few equivalent macro-plank...
